How to Submit

Instagram Kick-Off Contest:  May 20 Thru September 23, 2016  

Requirements: Open to anyone with a mobile phone. Photos need to be taken within one of the ten San Jose districts (see San Jose District Map). Hash-tag your photo @thisissanjose and #districtx (e.g., for District 1 use #district1; for District 10 use #district10, etc.) to a website where their entry will be displayed. Each photo should include a short description (140 characters or less). 1st, 2nd, 3rd and up to two honorable mention recipients will be selected for each district by the Youth Council Representative and a professional selected by the district. 

Submissions: begin on May 20, 2016 and end September 23, 2016. 

Key Instagram Kick-Off Contest Features

  • Instagram Format – either by smart phone or camera conversion 
  • Digital Images – hash-tagged @thisissanjose, #district 1-10
  • Winners – 1st, 2nd, 3rd and two honorable mentions selected by district council member and youth council member. 
  • Automatic Entry – Winners are automatically entered into the larger General Photo Contest

Photos need to show the uniqueness and diversity which is San Jose.

Juried Photography Exhibit - July 1 thru September 30, 2016

Requirements: Open to skill levels professional (earn over 50% from photography), non-professional or student (under age 18) with all types of photography equipment (digital or analog).

Submissions: Submit files via email to contest@thisissanjose.com with your name, category (professional, non-professional or student under 18), date photograph was taken, district taken (District map can be found at San Jose Council Districts) and photograph in jpg document format. Image file should be jpeg or jpg file at 1280x720 pixels with 72 dpi or as close to this size as possible.  Each photo should include a short description (140 characters or less). Entries must be submitted by September 30, 2016.  Winners will be displayed at an exhibition at the San Jose City Hall and encouraged to attend an awards reception. 

Juried Photography Exhibit Features: 

  • Juried Exhibit – Five judges will be selected. 
  • Submissions– digital images at 500 x 500 pixels at 72 dpi 
  • Standard Physical Format–16" x 20" frame, matted 13.5" x 10.5" opening. 
  • Instagram Kick-Off Contest Winners Auto Entry – Winners from Instagram contest are entered into Main Contest. 
  • Winner Categories – 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mentioned will be selected from three categories: student, non-professional and professional. Winners will be selected from all photo formats. 
  • San Jose City Hall Rotunda Exhibition - winners will be displayed at an exhibition at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda between October and December.  We are planning an awards reception for October 27 with prizes, food and fun.

Judgement Criteria

Your photo will be judged based on photographic technique, photographic creativity, and ability to identify uniqueness within a given San Jose Council district.

Instagram Kick-Off Contest:

Using a mobile device, photos may be submitted within the San Jose City limits and within one or more of the ten (10) districts (District map can be found at San Jose Council Districts). This contest is open to anyone using a mobile device and any skill level. The photos MUST BE HASH-TAGGED – with (@thisissanjose) and the number of the district where the photo was taken (#district1, #district2, etc.). Each photo should include a short description (140 characters or less).

Five judges will select winners by district in the Instagram Kick-off Contest. Each district will select a 1st, 2nd, 3rd place photo along with up to two honorable mention photos per district. Multiple entries are allowed per person. Photograph must have been taken in the City of San Jose, California, during the time frame of May 20, 2016, through contest submission deadline. Photos should indicate the diversity and uniqueness that is San Jose and its districts.

Those 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and up to two honorable mention winners from each of the ten (10) districts will be automatically entered into the primary contest.

Juried Photography Exhibit:

Open to any type of camera or mobile device. The exhibit will be judged by a group of professionals in three contestant levels: (1) professional - earns over 50% from photography), (2) non-professional, or (3) student under age 18. Open to all skill levels. Two entries are allowed per person. Photograph must have been taken in the City of San Jose, California and one or more of its Ten (10) districts, during the time frame of May 20, 2016, through submission deadline. Photos should indicate the diversity and uniqueness that is San Jose and its districts. Each photo should include a short description (140 characters or less).

Judges will select a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and up to two honorable mention winners for each of three categories professional (earn over 50% from photography), non-professional or student under age 18) for each of the ten (10) San Jose Council Districts (up to 50 photographs selected).

Finalists

We expect to choose approximately 50 photos to exhibit for up to three months at the San Jose City Rotunda. Finalists will be notified by e-mail in early October if they are selected for inclusion in the City Hall Rotunda Exhibit. At that time, a signed photo release form will be required. After you are notified, you may deliver to our collection point (TBD) a framed print of your photograph for exhibit. Judges will view the exhibit and select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners in the three categories plus a Best in Show. Prizes of cash and photography-related items will be awarded at the October 27 reception.
